Precision Prayer
Day 3 | Speak to the Mountain
A Scripture-centered reading from the Precision Prayer devotional collection.
When my girls were younger, we took them on a trip to West Virginia to ski. We had fresh snow, our youngest picked up skiing pretty quickly, and I loved being able to share something I enjoyed with my girls.
I had the privilege of skiing out west, and I would always tell the girls, “There are mountains, and then there are mountains.” When Kelsianne moved to Alaska, we met her in Park City, Utah for a ski trip and some family time together. Those western mountains were so massive and intimidating, the girls barely skied at all.
In life we face mountains. These are the moments when the mountain feels impossible and the only real answer must come from God.
These mountains will stretch your faith and sometimes drive you to your knees.
We had such a moment.
My daughter married her childhood sweetheart from youth group, and I had the privilege of marrying them. Like many young couples, they wanted children, but she battled over six years of infertility. The doctors said without expensive treatment, it wasn’t possible.
I didn’t fully understand that kind of pain at the time. As a father of three, it was hard to grasp the emotional highs and lows she was walking through each month. She longed for what she had been told she couldn’t have.
If you haven’t dealt with this, it’s hard to understand the highs and the lows. They are real, and painful. Her younger sister had a baby before her. This made it hard for Kelsianne to celebrate, yet even while Megan was hurting, she still rejoiced for her sister.
Watching both walk through this was painful but beautiful. The love of sisters. Our Megan believed God would provide. She had experienced God’s healing power before, so she spoke directly to her mountain. Her faith prevailed.
But now for the rest of the story. The same daughter who learned as a child that God can heal, held on to her faith. There were opportunities for adoption, but they believed God could intervene. It’s hard to capture the weight of that journey, but she held on, trusting she would have a “but God” testimony.
Today, I’m blessed with a three-year-old grandson who’s full of life and bigger than most kids his age. God fulfilled her desire as she patiently waited on Him. To put an exclamation point on this, she gave birth two years later to my namesake, Michael Truett. The name alone says a lot, right. Did I mention? But God.
Precision in Practice
There are moments in life where praying quietly is not enough. Sometimes faith requires us to speak directly to the mountain standing in front of us.
Jesus told the disciples to speak to the mountain. When Jesus prayed for the sick, He didn’t beg. He spoke to the situation. The disciples prayed the same way. They said Rise up and walk. Not, Lord please touch them. Our authority comes from Jesus and we must pray in his name. Whatever mountain stands in front of you today, remember this: The doctor may speak. Fear may speak. Circumstances may speak. But God always has the final word. Stop agreeing with fear. Speak life. Speak the Word. Speak to the mountain.
